Location: 17.8°N, 77.1°E
Elevation range: -2700 to -2100 meters, based on Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA)
Divided into 3 regions: The Plains, The Depression, The Syrtis Major Volcanics
The Northeast Syrtis landing site was chosen for its abundance of Noachian-aged megabreccia, hydrated minerals, phyllosilicates, and carbonates. The measurements of the elemental composition and abundance of the rocks and soil in NE Syrtis will help achieve the goal of understanding the past habitability of Mars by analyzing and studying the ancient hydrological and chemical alterations to the Martian crust. These elements will give information on the types of minerals present in the area.
